TAS: Federal funds sought for new sports precinct
Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD will be asked to kick in federal funds for a new sports
precinct for northern Tasmania when he arrives in the state for a two-day visit tomorrow.
Northern Tasmanian GP Dr JUDITH WATSON tackled Mr HOWARD on a commitment to the Elphin
Sport and Recreation Precinct on talkback radio today.
She says Launceston, like the rest of Tasmania, has a rapidly ageing population and
lacks a year-round facility for people of all ages and abilities.
Dr WATSON also told ABC radio the facility will help tackle obesity.
The $29 million project has already secured state government and local council funding,
but is seeking about $8 million from federal government coffers.
Mr HOWARD says he's aware of the project, but doesn't have the full details.
