NSW: StateRail boss 'frustrated' by Millenniums' problems

SYDNEY, Aug 7 AAP - Acting StateRail chief executive Vince Graham said today he wasfrustrated by EDI Rail's apparent inability to fix problems with its trouble-plagued Millenniumtrains.

Mr Graham said the trains would be restricted to certain sections of the CityRail networkto minimise the risk of disruption to passengers while bugs were being ironed out.

The decision followed yet another breakdown on Tuesday when a Millennium stalled foran hour at Milsons Point station just before 3pm, inconveniencing around 50,000 passengersat the start of peak hour.

It was the 22nd incident involving the high-tech trains since their reintroductionto service on June 2.

"Part of the process here is to (keep the trains running and) provide the contractorwith the opportunity to de-bug the train," Mr Graham told reporters.

"I am however, obviously frustrated by the inability of the contractor to get on topof this particular Train Operating System computer problem.

"They are working hard in order to resolve it.

"They don't know today what the cause of the problem is, and hence my frustration."

Mr Graham dismissed an opposition suggestion to run the trains only after midnightwithout passengers, saying passengers were needed to test the air conditioning and dooroperating systems.

He also denied August 17 was an important contract deadline for EDI, but said the companyhad until the end of August to meet several key contractual issues.
