Fed: Stem cell harvesting not a divisive issue for Labor:Beazley

SYDNEY, Aug 24 AAP - Stem cell harvesting will not be a divisive issue for the Labor
Party, federal Opposition Leader Kim Beazley says.

Mr Beazley today welcomed new research showing stem cells may be able to be created
without destroying human embryos, saying it is likely to help shift the moral ground on
the ongoing debate.

"That is potentially a very good piece of news," Mr Beazley told ABC Radio.

"If properly understood ... if that is actually something that is an accurate conveyer
of that information then it will make a difference to the moral debate."

Mr Beazley said while members of the Labor Party had different views, he didn't expect
any major division on the issue.

"It's not terribly divisive for us. Because of the particular character of this debate
we will inevitably, I believe, when the bill comes before the house, see the national
executive issuing a proposition that should be a free vote," he said.

"On our side, yes there will be differing opinions and there'll be a very strong moral
debate, but it wasn't last time divisive in my party and I don't expect it to be divisive
this time."
